San Diego, CA – Michelle Montejano, experienced trauma-trained somatic therapist and coach, is delighted to announce the opening of her new practice, Soma Wisdom. Soma Wisdom was born through her own journey and her years of experience walking her clients home to themselves.
As a member of a culture that is consumed with getting rid of pain and as a practitioner within a field that has historically sought to provide support by helping people to create distance from or to eliminate the experience of pain, Michelle is devoted to reclaiming the true nature of healing. The word healing comes from heal which means “to make sound or whole” and stems from the root, haelen, “the condition or state of being hal (whole).” Today, however, there is an implication that healing is a matter of eliminating, excising, or fixing. It is often forgotten that healing is actually a matter of returning individuals to their wholeness, which encompasses all of it: searing pain and exquisite pleasure, profound grief and unbounded joy, immense fear and sublime wonder.
The tendency as humans is to either become consumed by emotional and somatic experience, that is to say to become flooded and overwhelmed to the extent that contact with ther Self is lost—or to turn away from or disconnect from it, effectively shutting it down. But there is another way and this is what Michelle guides her clients toward relearning and remembering. It is possible to turn toward experience (emotions and sensations) and be with it. In “being with,” one stays tethered to the Self as the witnessing presence and cultivatesthe capacity to feel and experience all that one is designed to feel and experience.
True healing is not the eradication of pain. True healing is growing the capacity to hold it and to feel it without losing connection to the Self or suppressing it. Michelle’s commitment to those that she has the privilege of walking alongside is that she will not attempt to “rescue” anyone from pain nor will she guide individuals in learning ways to distance themselves from their pain. Michelle’s commitment is to sit with others in pain for as long as needed and guide the process of growing the capacity to actually allow full and complete feeling.
Somatic healing allows individuals to experience from the bottom-up and inside-out that which ancient wisdom keepers have known for millennia: the transformative, healing power of presence and turning towards that which is feared. The paradox is that in allowing one’s self to be with all that is preferred not to be felt, one grows the capacity to allow in all that is deeply desired—which is ultimately just on the other side of being with pain. Given this, Michelle recognizes that somatic healing is about so much more than healing trauma, childhood wounding, nervous system patterning, and emotional and behavioral patterns. It is about restoring individuals to their essential nature and reclaiming aliveness, vitality and wholeness, which is a birthright.
